I often meet with couples for their consultation and ask a TON of questions, about love, life, wedding and all things in between. One of the things we discuss is whether or not they would like to do an engagement session. People often think of an engagement session from the purpose of sending out “Save the Dates” or using in an announcement but this is most definitely not the only purpose for doing one.
Engagement sessions are a great way to get to know your Photographer, because we can sit and chat all you want…. but when I ask you to snuggle up to each other and get lovey while I am paparazzi-ing a few feet away it is a whole different dynamic. Not to mention you can see all the galleries and blog posts you want from a Photographer, but none of them have YOU as the subject. Engagement sessions give you a chance to experience what it’s like to be the center of focus in a photo shoot, learn the tips and tricks to make sure you look your best in images, as well as gain a working relationship with your Photographer to better help you work together on your wedding day. Also, often times many people haven’t had their photo professionally taken since their senior year in High School, which is a much different style of Photography and doesn’t involve you interacting with another person. For many couples this may also be one of the last times they are professionally photographed in a more casual setting together before they have children.
After your engagement session is over and the photos are edited, we will schedule a meeting to go over them together. We review what you love about your session and take notes about things that we might want to do differently for your wedding day. Many Brides also take the engagement session as an opportunity to test run their makeup, because looking at your makeup in a mirror is quite different than what it looks like on camera.
Overall I am a big fan of engagement sessions for many reasons, but it doesn’t fit for every couple…. so make sure that no matter what you decide that it’s right for you!
